The History Past Rectors

St. Jude’s College was built by Rev. Dr. M. C. Leslie Fernando who we call “The Great Father and Founder of the College”. On 14 th January 2003 Archbishop Emeritus the Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis declared open St. Jude’s College as a branch of St. Peter’s College – Bambalapitiya.

Initially, classes for Grade one were held at Kithu Nana Institution – situated in the premises of St. Mary’s Church – Negombo, since construction was underway to shift the College to the present venue. On 2 nd September 2003, St. Jude’s College created history, as the students and the staff moved away from Kithu Nana to be on their own, at the picturesque present location.

The present premises at Kurana was bought by Archbishop Emeritus the Most. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando in 2002 from the Society of St. Pius. It was a very hallowed land with the lagoon bordering the western side of the school. Everyone who beholds it, is mesmerized by the panoramic view of nature’s beauty. The geographical location provides a very conducive environment for educational activities.

The first school building was put up with the funds received from Rev. Fr. Jean Kraus from Holland. The building was declared open on 3 rd September 2003 by Archbishop Emeritus the Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis. The main objective of this College has been to provide education in English in a religious atmosphere in order to cater to the economically marginalized people of the area. The College Chapel a very spacious and beautiful one was declared open by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith on 12 th September 2012. Daily Mass is offered here for the students and the management encourages the students to participate.

The first principal of the College was Rev. Sr. Mercy Fernando SDS with Rev. Fr. Roshan Janaka to assist her. Later Rev. Fr.Rohitha Rodrigo became the Rector with Rev. Fr. Dinusha Gayan being the Vice Rector who was later succeeded by Rev. Fr. Ruwan Pradeep. Later Rev. Sr. Mangalika Fernando was appointed the Deputy Principal of the College. In the period ensuing a lot of development took place by way of new buildings.

The College developed gradually and presently she has classes from Grade one to Advanced Level. The student population today is 1,821 and the tutorial staff is comprised of 77 teachers (2020). Non- academic and support staff have increased to 20 members (2020).

The first ever Ordinary Level batch appeared for the examination in December 2013. The first Advanced Level batch faced the exam in August 2016 in all three streams.

The College saw another landmark when with effect from 1 st January 2019 when she became an independent school attached to the Negombo Educational Zone. The Department of Education insists that the College maintains the title of the College as St. Peter’s College – Colombo 4, Negombo Branch.

Another change of administration came into effect on 1 st August 2019 when Rev. Fr. Daya Dharshana Perera was appointed the Rector of the College and Rev. Fr. Shalindra Kotikawatte assumed duties as the Vice Rector.
